Last year November I expressed my opinion against Zwarte Piet (Black Pete) on Facebook and in a number of interviews.
I knew there were people who would disagree with me, but the reactions were so violent that I was shocked.

I received hundreds of threats via Facebook but also in my mailbox at home. The most terrible things were said to me, but also things that were directed to my children.
I was upset for quite a few days. Because of this, I ended up writing the song Breathe.
Tomorrow the preparations for the annual event Sinterklaas will start and I am glad that there are now a number of cities that have traded Zwarte Piet for multicolored Pieten (Pete’s)
It marks the beginning and in a few years our children will not understand why we ever tolerated this.
